The aim of this project is to help students make the transition from life as a secondary school student to life as an independent third level student. The team’s goal is to reduce the negative impact of this transition and ensure that senior-cycle students feel fully prepared, secure and confident in their abilities to manage life away from home while in university.
The Action
The team developed a “life skills” manual for senior-cycle students. The manual contains nutritious, easy to make and low-cost recipes as well as household hints. The team also ran a successful poster campaign, Facebook and Twitter pages.
Future plans include a website that will contain information about student grants, accommodation, budgeting and a link to the tips available in the booklet.
The Impact
It is the team’s long term goal that details about their website and manual will be given to fifth and sixth year students in schools around Ireland. They also hope that regional conferences can take place on an annual basis for senior-cycle students. These conferences would provide information, speakers and tools about the issues raised in our project.
