The team’s main goal is to raise awareness of how the closure and reduction of hours in Garda stations has affected locals in their area. The team wanted to bring this issue to the attention of local politicians to lobby for an increase in Gardaí in rural stations and reverse the decision taken in 2012.
The group worked with the metalwork and woodwork departments in creating their project symbol; with the I.T department that helped them develop a booklet for the local politicians; local shops supplied materials to decorate their props and symbol; Bank of Ireland, local Gardaí, Garda Haddock and Garda Gleeson. They have created Facebook and twitter accounts to get in contact with a wider community. They gathered a petition with over 1000 signatures.
Their future plan is to hold a Rural Crime talk in their school and to put pressure on local representatives to bring up this issue as a real concern of rural people in the Dáil.
