Disturbed by the gross misuse of water and energy by individuals, the Greener Globe team strongly felt that a solution to this problem was needed. They could not imagine the future if current levels of water and energy use continued. The project team therefore had a simple but significant aim; to protect natural resources for future generations. The Greener Globe team began to see how they could contribute to a positive solution to this problem.
The Action
The group discovered that people were generally spending too long in the shower and were not keeping track of their water or electricity use. The team knew that there must be a solution to this problem and through the course of their YSI project designed the revolutionary Aquacica shower head.
How it works
The Aquacica shower head encourages users to reduce water waste by taking shorter showers. The integrated timed LED lights follow a traffic light system of green, amber and red with the shower head changing colour the longer the user has been in the shower.
As well as developing the Aquacica shower head, the team also designed a Water Leak Detection System which helps to save water and electricity on farms.
The project team realised that education about water and energy conservation was still required in order to save much needed resources. The group organised classes for primary and secondary school students in their area and encouraged many people across their community to start thinking wisely about water and electricity efficiency.
The project team worked with a number of partners to learn more about water and electricity efficiency as well as to develop their products.
The Impact
Greener Globe’s innovative design solutions caught the attention of industry experts, and the team travelled to Moscow to present at the SAGE World Cup 2014 (Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship). Delegations from 16 countries took part, and Greener Globe won the top award in the Social Enterprise Business category. The project was an astounding success, leading to the patent of the Aquacica shower head design.
The team estimated that they saved a staggering 22 million litres of water per year as well as providing financial savings to consumers. A commercial success, the Aquacica went into production with business expanding within Ireland and Europe. The demand for the product continues to grow. Greener Globe proved that no matter how large a problem is, it is possible to find original and enterprising solutions.
