The main aim of Beara Community School’s project was the creation and distribution of a school pack for second level students that would include information on coeliac disease and help people with the disease in their school and society by raising awareness about this auto-immune disease.
The STEM Response
The group created an app containing many features such as an online forum, listed food premises which provide gluten-free (GF) options, coeliac recipes and a space to make updates on gluten free products. The team was also extremely passionate about publishing a cookbook which contained coeliac recipes recommended by chefs across the country.
The Impact
The team educated students and introduced gluten free products into the school canteen. During this whole process they got in contact with a number of organisations such as Safe Food, HSE, West Cork HSE, VHI, Aer Lingus, Iarnród Eireann and Gluten Free Ireland, whilst also co-operated with the local restaurants and businesses adding more gluten free products to menus and shelves. This project was praised by Vodafone Foundation Ireland awarding it with the “Mobile for Good”Award 2016. The team was also endorsed and supported by the YSI Den with an award of €750
