The Stop Trafficking of People… Stopping This Ongoing Problem!! S.T.O.P. team want to raise awareness about human trafficking and has raised funds to assist victims.
The Action
In 2013-2014, the St Mary’s YSI project team first introduced the topic of Anti Human Trafficking to the school, working to raise awareness and funds for victims of human trafficking. Continuing this important work, the 2014-2015 team further developed the campaign. The project team’s aim is to ensure people know how to recognise the signs of human trafficking so that it can be prevented. The students collaborated with a number of different organisations and produced an anti- Human Trafficking booklet titled ‘Know the Signs’, which was presented to Pope Francis at the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences at the Vatican.
The Impact
The students raised awareness for this cause at a national level by running two successful social media campaigns "Blue Heart" and "Real Men Don't Buy Girls". They also hosted a hugely successful Colour Run, with over 5,000 participants contributing proceeds to Act To Prevent Trafficking (APT). His holiness Pope Francis has requested that the 'Know the Signs' booklet is uploaded to the Global Freedom Network website and it will be translated into French, Italian and Spanish. The project team plans to present the project at a local all boys’ school and to distribute the booklet to all second level schools in Munster.
