The goal of the project is to raise awareness of the issue of human trafficking. They chose this topic because they felt strongly about it and the fact that not a lot of people are aware of it. They wanted to raise awareness at both a local level and a global level using as many methods of communication as possible, from the ancient , such as flags being used to spread a message, to the super modern social media, not forgetting the tried and tested radio waves and print media.
The Action
Throughout the course of their project they worked with many different organisations and people, such as 96fm , Redfm , Mary Crilly, Tara McGrath, Cllr. Dara Murphy, Cllr Billy Kelleher, Cllr. Ted Tynan, Lord Mayor Chris O’Leary, UCC Radio, Siobhan Mullally, Nicola O’Sullivan –the Lord Mayor’s secretary, Tara Marshall – the flag maker, Audrey from the Evening Echo.
They set up social media accounts to raise awareness worldwide. They worked with juniors in their school to create posters. They spoke on Cork’s local radio stations, had articles in local newspapers and held demonstrations outside Brown Thomas. They conducted surveys and handed out flyers. They had their flag flying outside the City Hall for a week, They presented their project to a women's club, held a cake sale to raise money for the Sexual Violence Centre and invited senior students to attend a Human Trafficking talk by Siobhan Mullally of the GRETA group.
They visited the red light district in Amsterdam. They invited Mia de Faoite from Dublin who is actively involved in the Turn off the Red Light campaign to give a talk in their school.
The Impact
They are hoping to continue to raise Awareness about this topic by continuing to update their social sites and by participating in debates on the radio. They want to try to convince politicians to make the penalties for the traffickers more severe.
Their visit to the Red Light District in April, had a profound effect on the #TIMB team as they saw first-hand the plight of trafficked women and they felt a renewed sense of purpose to continue raising awareness of human trafficking. They have built a friendship with Mary Crilly of the sexual violence centre in Cork and will continue to work on projects with her. They have already committed to running the mini marathon for her 'The One In Five' campaign in September.
