We have made a PowerPoint presentation to be used during SPHE classes in our school, & hopefully to spread across schools in Ireland. We also received €700 in funds from YSI to buy Breast exam demo models for our school & 3 other schools in county Wexford. Mentorship from YSI will also be used to learn how to approach such a sensitive subject within the classroom. Bringing this subject revolving women’s health into the classroom is our goal. We aim to break the stigma revolving around breast cancer & will hopefully get others to spread the word about the importance of checking ourselves. Early detection saves lives.
Our Social Issue
Early detection in Breast cancer & the lack of education revolving breast checks.
Why We Chose It
This project is close to our hearts. A member of our groups mother passed away in 2010 from breast cancer. She wasn’t educated about the importance of checking herself, and so found a lump on her breast too late. All of us in the group know someone who has or had breast cancer.
Our Goal
Be Breast Aware aims to break the stigma revolving breast cancer and to teach students across secondary schools in Ireland how and when to check themselves. When breast cancer is detected early, there is an 85% chance of survival. Teaching people how to detect abnormalities will help save lives! We want to highlight women's health in Irish society.
Our Innovative Action
We have spread the word regarding the importance of self examinations through guest speakers, word of mouth, function information display stand, posters, zoom calls & on our social media page @bebreastaware_ . We also pitched our project to YSI during The Den and received 700 euro in funds & mentorship on how to present the classroom PowerPoint we made to be used in SPHE classes. We have contacted organisations and conducted a lot of research.
Our Impact
We have taught lots of people, of all ages, to check themselves & what to look out for when checking themselves. We have started to introduce a lesson plan in SPHE classes in our school that teach students how & when to check themselves. We have also connected with people & empathized with them about their experiences. People have expressed to us how they now check themselves regularly.
