Our project goal is to provide a safe space for students to speak up if they are experiencing any form of bullying. We would like to raise an awareness around bullying and its link to mental health. We want to help students manage their anxiety around the issue and provide them with coping skills to manage their mental health.

Our Social Issue

Mental Health - How bullying affects young people's mental health in school. How can we help.

THE BULLYBUSTERS

Why We Chose It

We felt that bullying is a relevant topic and in a secondary school environment there is a stigma about coming forward and speaking out against bullying. Mental health is such an important topic and the impact of bullying on a person's mental health can be devastating. From our survey we found out that 45 percent of students do not believe that the school does enough to prevent bullying. We wanted to decrease this statistic and make the school a place where students feel happy and safe at all times.

THE BULLYBUSTERS

Our Goal

We came together as a class to brainstorm ideas for our YSI project and agreed that bullying was a relevant issue. There is a stigma about speaking out against bullying in the secondary school environment. We wanted to destigmatize this. We were chosen to pilot the one good school initiative by JIGSAW. We merged these projects as bullying affects mental health. Our goals were to; Make students feel comfortable going to school so they learn better, have better attendance and better marks. Equip students with coping skills to deal with anxiety Know what to do if they experience bullying.

THE BULLYBUSTERS

Our Innovative Action

We collaborated with several different departments Aoife from JIGSAW did a workshop with us. Posters around the school. Made lesson plans, presented them to the Junior Cycle years. Created a script, rap, song and a storyboard for our short film. Peter Moles from 'Emerging Limerick Filmmakers' came and did a workshop with us. Lucy Dawson created a short film with us. Anti-bullying/Wellbeing week in school from the 20th to the 24th of February 2023 Collaborated with the P.E, Art, Home Ec, Language and Music departments.

THE BULLYBUSTERS

Our Impact

We presented lesson plans to the Junior cycle years to educate them on bullying. We highlighted how common bullying is in society and how easily it can happen in a secondary school environment. We then asked students to answer the survey which gave us informative feedback. We felt that this made a positive difference as students were now more aware of bullying and the effects it has on a person's mental health. We provided them links to YSI and JIGSAW's amazing support teams. We displayed posters around the school which reminded students to respect one another.
