We wanted to tackle mental health and social isolation by encouraging people to engage in new hobbies in the hopes of expanding their social circles and encouraging their creativity to improve their overall mental health.
Our Social Issue
Mental Health, specifically tackling loneliness and social isolation.
Why We Chose It
We chose this social issue because we felt strongly about mental health and we felt like being a teenager has its own stresses and anxiety, but with COVID this was all compounded by social isolation leading people to feel lonely. We wanted to help people find positive coping mechanisms and get them to step out of their comfort zones and try new things and broaden their social circles at the same time.
Our Goal
We want to tackle mental health and social isolation by encouraging people to engage in new hobbies in the hopes of expanding their social circles and encouraging their creativity to improve their overall mental health. Right now, we have been concentrating on our school, we already see success with our Monday Madness Activities Sheets, World Cup Follow Along, Weekly Lunch Activities, Christmas Team Building, and our jam-packed Wellbeing Week. Over the coming months, we hope to reinforce it and solidify some of our ideas in the yearly plan for our school.
Our Innovative Action
1. World Cup Follow Along Event – teams assigned to classes, showing the games, tracking the points and fixtures in a display 2. Weekly Lunch Activities such as Bingo, Kahoot Quizzes Penalty Shoot Out and more. 3. Monday Madness – activity sheets delivered on Mondays to all students including mindful colouring, puzzles, sudoku, riddles and more. 4. Christmas Activities – Arts & Crafts and Team Building 5. Wellbeing Week – Pottery, Drum Dance, Sculpturing, Futsal Tournaments, Teachers vs. Students Game, Board Games, Karen Weekes - Guest Speaker and more.
Our Impact
Our events have been really well received. Students really enjoyed the World Cup Follow Along and live games. The Weekly Lunchtime Events are well attended every Thursday with students from all year groups getting involved. Our biggest success was our Wellbeing Week. The atmosphere in the school was so positive and energetic that week. Everyone was involved and got a chance to try loads of new activities. Everyone looked forward to coming to school all that week. Our Staff vs. Students soccer game was especially high energy with plenty of cheering and chanting.
