We aim to reduce the cost of living by encouraging people to live more sustainability.
Our Social Issue
Cost of Living and how it can lead to homelessness.
Why We Chose It
This project is important to us because homelessness is an issue that happens all around Ireland that is usually ignored. We felt that with the rising cost of living, people were going to be more in danger of becoming homeless in the future. We looked at how we could tackle cost of living in an everyday way and sustainability fit really well.
Our Goal
Our main goal is to help people tackle the cost of living by giving them sustainable tips to use around their homes. We hope to help with people's usage of power, food wastage, and daily cost of living expenses. We also hope to teach them how to grow their own food at home, how it can be simple, time friendly, and can be done in the smallest of gardens or even in a window box. We hope to take people on our learning journey with us and ultimately save them money on the food shop.
Our Innovative Action
1. Created a TikTok with Sustainable Shorts - short education videos on how to save energy and be more sustainable in the home. 2. Create an Instagram with recipes to help tackle food waste and posts about energy-saving tips. 3. Survey the school and petition for a water fountain and the banning of single use plastics at school. 4. Growing vegetables in our school Polytunnel and documenting our journey for others so they can learn with us. 5. Collaborate with the Green School Committee to run a Sustainability Awareness Week.
Our Impact
We feel like our TIkToks are gaining good traction with each of our videos receiving at least 500 views. These range from how to bleed a radiator, to how to replace the battery in your calculator to power saver mode in laptops. These are all small ways to be more efficient in your energy use. Getting approval for the water fountain to be reinstated was a huge win for the school, students can't wait for it to come back so that they can save money and not use so much plastic.
