To further highlight the MICA housing crisis in Donegal and beyond. The team wants to make people aware how much is truly affects students lives and the overall impact it can have on them. As they are now considered senior students, the group are becoming more and more aware of just how difficult it is to find suitable accommodation in third level. The lack of availability and the ever increasing cost of it worries students so they want to raise this issue from the student perspective and become involved as future third level students in assisting solve the issue.
Our Social Issue
MICA Housing issue and Housing for students and the difficulties they face when trying to find suitable accommodation for third level.
Why We Chose It
We chose these issues because many of us are affected by the mica crisis and we want to help achieve 100% redress, in regards to the student accommodation crisis we will soon be going to college and we don't want to struggle with finding accommodation. It is unacceptable what people are going through in regards to housing, people of all ages, from young to old. We want to show the young persons perspective and hopefully make a difference. What sets us aside from others is that we are directly affected by our chosen issues and we ourselves want help.
Our Goal
We hope to help be apart of raising awareness of these two housing issues. We would love to be apart of achieving 100% redress for all mica affected families. We hope that our project will help give us a better chance to get student accommodation in the near future. Overall, we want to make people more aware of how these issues are affecting people, young people in particular as we feel as their voices are not adequately heard.
Our Innovative Action
To begin our campaign, we set up our social media pages on Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. We conducted a survey throughout our whole school, including staff and students. We asked them questions about the mica crisis and the student accommodation crisis. Our social media pages began to gain attention. Proceeding this, we were invited to be interviewed on Highland Radio Station, to discuss our project and survey results. We also took part in the Schools Drama Festival in the Balor Theatre, with a play showing these issues. We where successful in this competition winning overall best performace in the competition.
Our Impact
We have made a positive difference especially in our local community in regards to the mica crisis. We have received positive feedback from the public on our project. Many third level students have condemmed us on our work. Our project is based on people and how housing affects them. Not only physically but mentally aswell. We are very passionate about the mental health affects having no housing causes. During our radio interview we where applauded for the route in which we took the project. Local politicians too have supported our campaign and said it has made a positive difference.
