They hope to bring awareness to first years about protecting their mental health and their wellbeing. Helping the first years with their choices of diet, sleep patterns, mental health etc...
Our Social Issue
The students have chosen to look at mental and physical health. They are examining the challenges that are attached to this. They want to promote good health and wellbeing in school, particularly for the first years.
Why We Chose It
We choose this social issue as a class because we all felt that first year was a difficult moment in our lives as we were growing up and in a new school. We would have loved the opportunity to hear from older students about their experience of first year. Not only do we want the first years to hear from us, we want to help them improve their well-being and provide information on dealing with social anxiety, mental health and physical health. This is why we chose this social issue.
Our Goal
The research conducted by our class shows the need for students to discuss their mental health and their feelings. It is essential to allow a safe space for students to explore these emotions and challenges. We hope to promote well being amongst first years with workshops and more time to interact with the first years in SPHE classes. They gain a relationship with senior students and understand that everyone experiences difficulties in first year and that it is possible to overcome your difficulties.
Our Innovative Action
We have been allowed to teach the students about mental health and well-being during their SPHE classes. We have also created a proposal for workshops in school where first years spend the day exploring mental health, physical health and reflecting on their past year.
Our Impact
I believe that myself and my class have made a positive difference. Many first years are always coming over to speak to me and my friends at lunchtime. They want to tell us about how they've improved their lifestyle. An example being that some have taken a break from social media while others have improved their sleeping habits. Many of them are always saying hi to us in the hallways and it is a lovely feeling to see the younger students so happy to greet us. It makes us feel that we have began an important project in school.
