Our Social Issue
Loneliness amongst the elderly.
Why We Chose It
We were researching ideas and found that this is a big issue that people don't talk about too much. We decided this year that we would like to do something on this idea. We carried out a task called the A-Z of social issues and this was one of the ideas we came up with
Our Goal
We wanted to help alleviate loneliness amongst the elderly. We found from our research that many people don't have family members and may live alone or in a nursing home. They sometimes don't have many visitors or chat to people so we found this was an important issue to focus on.
Our Innovative Action
We baked cookies, made Christmas cards and sang Christmas carols to the elderly people in the nursing home that we visited. Each resident at the nursing home got a handmade Christmas card with a note inside. We did outsource the work to some SPHE classes where they took part in making the Christmas cards. There were so many residents that we needed help to make them all. The classes that helped really enjoyed the process and found it very relaxing and enjoyable. We hadn't anticipated this reaction prior to the project but we were so glad it made an impact
Our Impact
We think we made a positive difference. Anyone we encountered liked our ideas and thought we were doing good work. The elderly people we visited were so thankful and for many you could visibly see the positive happy difference the work we did do.
