Our Social Issue
Domestic abuse in relationships
Why We Chose It
Our project is called ‘Love Should Never Hurt’ and our aim is to spread awareness about domestic abuse. We decided to choose this topic as we feel it is a topic that is very serious and needs to be spoken about more. We feel the need to educate others about the topic. Domestic abuse is a very complex issue and based on the results of our surveys, we realised that many younger students in our school could not identify the different forms of abuse. We also discovered that several students thought that abuse was just male to female.
Our Goal
We know that domestic abuse is not a game however we were determined to find a method in order to educate younger students about our topic. We decided that a card game aimed at students between the ages of 12 and 15 i.e. first to third year second level students would be the most effective method. Card games promote teamwork, strategy, skills like communication and cooperation while it’s also fun and educational. Which Sustainable Goals does our innovation impact? We believe that our project aligns with number 3 - Good Health and Well being and number 4- quality education.
Our Innovative Action
We have done several things to create awareness around the topic of domestic abuse. We did surveys and collated the results We started a highly successful social media campaign on TikTok and Instagram and amassed a big following We went into SPHE junior classes in our school, We had a Jingle Mingle at Christmas where we baked goods and had Christmas games to raise vital funds for the West Cork Women against Violence project. We had a trade fair in our school and had a stand promoting our project and had interactive games to encourage understanding about domestic abuse.
Our Impact
Yes, our card game has proved a hit with SPHE teachers in our schools and the 3rd year classes that played it. The community that visited the trade fair were also highly impressed with our research and campaign to spread awareness.
