Our goal is to take the necessary action to help cut down on the number of girls that quit sport and to aim for gender equality in our local clubs and beyond.
Our Social Issue
We have chosen to address the issue of inequality in sport and the fact that part of the reason that girls drop out of sport from around the age of 14 is because of such inequality.
Why We Chose It
We chose this social issue as we’re in an all girls school and as girls who play sports we first handedly see the impact that sport can have on your life. We think this is an important issue and one that we would like to make a difference on. Our aim is to inspire as many young girls as possible to play sports.
Our Goal
One of our idea’s is to tackle inequality in sports in our local area. Our biggest hope for this project is to encourage young girls to stay in sports. Our goals are to bring awareness to the inequality happening worldwide and by showing other people’s stories we hope to inspire girls to stay in sport. We are having a speed dating workshop with 1st and 3rd years in April. During this we hope to motivate the girls to stay in sport or pick up a sport. We also plan on fundraising for HerSport by holding a bake sale in our school and holding a puc fada competition with 2 other local secondary schools.
Our Innovative Action
We held a talk for 2nd and 4th years to motivate them to stay in sports. This had a big impact on our school community as we got positive feedback from the girls saying that it inspired them. We also regularly post on our instagram promoting women in sport and their unbelievable achievements. We think this is important as it highlights the fact that they’ve overcome challenges and everyone can accomplish their dreams if they’re determined.
Our Impact
We’ve made a positive difference as we’ve shown young girls the importance of playing sports throughout their teenage years and continuing during their adult life. Now that the girls know the importance of staying in sport we think they’ll be more inclined to continue on this sporting journey of theirs. We invited past pupils back to the school to speak about all their achievements and challenges at the talk. We think this showed the girls that their dreams are within their reach as the speakers were once in the exact same position.
