Our team hopes to help the EAL students in our school integrate comfortably into this new environment. We want them to feel comfortable and part of the school community. We want to give them a safe space to go if they’re overwhelmed or want to talk to someone. Fostering a supportive and understanding environment can help EAL students feel more integrated, enhancing not only their language skills but also their overall well-being. By acknowledging and addressing these social challenges, we can work towards a more inclusive educational system for all students.
Our Social Issue
The social issue we choose is helping the English as an Additional Language (EAL) students in our school feel more included, welcome and comfortable. English as an Additional Language (EAL) students often face unique social challenges that can impact their educational experience. The language barrier can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation and difficulty in forming connections with peers. We would like to break down these barriers.
Why We Chose It
We chose this social issue because as a group and team we knew it was important especially because of the influx of EAL students to our school this year. We empathize with these students and knew it was hard for them to enter a new school especially one where the majority of the people speak a different language.
Our Goal
The goal of our project is for our team to help the EAL students in our school integrate comfortably into this new environment. We want to make them feel accepted in our school community and to give them a safe space to go if they’re overwhelmed or want to talk to someone. We have done this by designating a classroom for our them to learn, relax and be around others in a similar situation who understand what they are experiencing. This class will offer them a better learning experience as the teacher will be more focused on their individual education.
Our Innovative Action
We have developed seven different actions for our YSI project including: creating a booklet, organising a culture week, designating a classroom for our EAL students, our speak out performance, a survey we sent out to the EAL students, a culinary day, had german markets and made posters for our project.
Our Impact
We made a great difference in our school community. The aim of our project was to help the EAL students in our school integrate better and feel more comfortable. Our project doesn't only affect the EAL students in our school but also their family, friends and teachers. Moving to a different school is difficult enough but moving to a different country can be even more challenging.
