We want to improve the mental and physical health of people in our community who may turn to substances for support. We aim to inform people about the dangers involved with substance abuse and raise awareness of the issue.
Our Social Issue
Substance abuse in our local community. This will include investigating drug, alcohol and vape use in the area.
Why We Chose It
We chose this social issue because we know it is a relevant issue for young people. We wanted to raise awareness of it and the dangers that come with substance use. We wanted to encourage young people to to make healthy choices in life and be educated in their choices.
Our Goal
Our idea is around substance use and abuse for young people. We want to research this, raise awareness of this issue and encourage alternative ways for young people to spend their free time. We want to have a guest speaker come to speak and give us a real life account of this issue. We also would like to speak to first year students to educate them. Lastly, we would like to experience and promote other extracurricular activities for young people to get involved in.
Our Innovative Action
We educated ourselves on our social issue through research. We then shared what we had learned and important information about substance use and vaping with 1st Year students. We visited a local Foroige club and encouraged young people to attend their drop in clinic. Next, guest speakers from Cuan Mhuire came into our school to speak to our year group and share stories about substance use. Lastly, we have been in contact with Cuan Mhuire and are currently organising a fundraiser for them.
Our Impact
We believe we have made a positive difference by spreading awareness about health wellbeing and substance use/addiction. We helped first years to understand this issue and the risks involved by talking about them and we made an impact on transition years students by brining in guest speakers who shared impactful and moving stories about this social issue. We have also encouraged first years to go to the Foroige youth group which is a positive activity for them to take part in and keeps them busy.
