Why We Chose It
The issue that we want to deal with is Awareness for Cancer and Cancer Supports- specifically in the Solas Cancer Support Centre, Waterford. We believe that this issue is important in today's society and in our community as many of us know people who have suffered with or died from Cancers. From our research on the Solas Website, we found that services like Counselling, Therapies and treatments like Reflexology were used by over 3,000 people.
Our Goal
Our main goals: 1. Help to raise awareness and educate the students of our school to highlight Cancer as an issue in today's society and also tell them about the importance of the services of the Solas Cancer Support Centre through a poster/awareness campaign. 2. Organise a TY Sponsored Walk. 3. Have this walk on the 'Go Orange Day' to link with the Solas Centre's own campaign and annual Walk for Life.
Our Innovative Action
Our main action was our Go Orange for Solas TY Sponsored Walk, in which we ran an awareness campaign and walk that will help raise awareness and funds for The Solas Cancer Support Centre
Our Impact
Our Walk and Campaign achieved our goals. We held a focus group discussion and linked with the Students Council afterwards again to ask if it was a success. It was agreed that it was. We had posters in every area of the school and most TY students wore orange on the day of the walk which meant the reach for our campaign was very visable school-wide. We also raised €150 for the Solas Centre, which we are very proud of. It was suggested by the Student Council that we make the Sponsored walk and Go Orange Day an annual event.
