Raise awareness about responsible ownership of dogs and stop the rising numbers of dogs surrendered to shelters. Also to give a second life to daily life products and convert them into useful dog items the shelters can use like beds out of pillowcases.
Our Social Issue
Abandonment of dogs, shelters not having enough resources for the dogs, due to the increased number of dogs in shelters after COVID.
Why We Chose It
We chose this social issue because everyone in our group is interested in the wellbeing of dogs, as we all have our own dogs. We have all agreed that responsible ownership of dogs has become a big problem in the years during and after COVID as people adopted dogs to pass the time in lockdown without considering if they are able to take care of the dog in the long run.
Our Goal
Our big idea is to hopefully get the number of dogs abandoned in Ireland to significantly decrease. We hope that our project can reach all of Ireland as it will have higher impact rates if more people in Ireland are aware of the shocking numbers of dogs abandonment. Our idea is to make lots and lots of dog beds that we can donate to the shelters, these beds will hopefully make the dogs feel more comfortable and at home while in the dog shelters, we also hope to donate lots of treats, toys, grooming equipment, food ect... to the shelters.
Our Innovative Action
The actions that we have taken is that we set up a Tiktok and Instagram account to raise awareness about abandoned dogs to people outside of our school community. We have set up a donation box in our school for students and teachers to donate old pillowcases, blankets, fabrics etc... That we can use to make into dog beds that we are going to donate to dog shelters. Munster lost and found have also invited us to meet some of the dogs that have been abandoned. We have visited the local primary school to raise awareness to the younger generation.
Our Impact
We have a decent amount of followers on our Instagram account, on this account we have posts spreading awareness about dog abandonment, posts about how to be a responsible dog breeder, and posts about how to spot a responsible breeder, we hope that these posts will positively benefit all of our follower's, and people who view our account. The posters we hung up around our school have also gathered lots of attention from teachers and students, we hope that people can learn from our posters. Many people have also donated useful materials, dog items, toys etc. to our appeal.
