Promote Irish culture, heritage, language, sports and music within our school through awareness and activities.
Our Social Issue
The decline of Irish culture, heritage, language, sports and music in Ireland
Why We Chose It
We chose this social issue because it's such a broad topic and it covers each members interests. We also feel that if this issue is not addressed in schools, the problem will continue. Students/ Teenagers often have a very negative attitude towards Irish and feel the language is dying. This was a main factor for our project. We want to prove to students that this topic is important for Irish young people and there is so much we can all learn from researching and planning events with our five different topics.
Our Goal
Our main goal for this project is to promote Irish culture, heritage, sports, music and language around our school in an enjoyable way. We believe that we can change students' perspective on this topic as we think it’s important for Irish people to embrace Irish education, music and sport. We plan on doing this by organising fun events for students focusing on five specific topics Irish music, language, culture, history and sport. We have already seen success in our previous events we have ran the school like Maidin Caife and St Brigid cross making. We hope to continue with more.
Our Innovative Action
Instagram account promoting Irish tales, tips, events run in the school and seanfocail. A coffee morning (Maidin Caife) where students and teachers came to speak Irish with friends. We are teaching 1st year how to play handball during their PE classes. Getting involved and running workshops for Biddy's Day. Hosting a Speed Dating style Irish practice for 6th Yrs during Wellbeing Week. Thomas F Meagher Foundation Flag Day event in school. Seachtain na Gaeilge Ceili and brush dance workshops. Trip to Muckross Traditional Farms with 1st Yrs for heritage and history.
Our Impact
Our events have been a great success so far. Students really enjoyed Maidin Caife the Irish coffee morning followed by the hat making at Christmas. Everyone was so positive and got involved. Our most recent event was the St Brigid cross making with 1st year and TY students. Again, everyone was very positive and everyone was able to make a St Brigid cross by the end of the workshop. Our Irish speed dating events for 6th years were a big hit and students enjoyed a different way of preparing for the orals. We hope future events to be a success.
