Our goal as a group is to reduce the amount of general waste in our school. To re-introduce recycling and waste in our classrooms. To introduce a bin system in the central area of our school which is where students eat at break and lunchtime. We feel this will improve the general appearnce and look of the school. The current bin and recycling system isn’t working and we need to improve the correct use of the bins and the education of students and teachers. Our goal is to improve the school’s quality of life.
Our Social Issue
The issue we are examing in YSI is the issue of waste in our school. We had a system of recycling before Covid which worked to some extent but since Covid there is very little recycling happening in the school. We need to address this problem.
Why We Chose It
We chose this social issue as we felt our school and community were not recycling correctly and leaving litter everywhere polluting our area. We felt we could make a change in the school and get everyone recycling and using the bins to tidy the place up and save the school money on bins. We feel if everyone starts to recycle now they will implement in their everyday life and create positive habits for the future.
Our Goal
Our big idea is to get students to dispose their waste in the correct bins in the school. The current system isn't clear. We want to introduce a new bin system that is uniform in all classrooms so it is clear. All new bins will be labelled and each class will have bin monitor (a student). Once we have the system up and running in the classroom then we will tackle the general areas and outside.
Our Innovative Action
* To date we have had a workshop with Craig Benton and Wexford Co.Co. * Sent an email to Mary Butler TD, Waterford about the issue of waste and provision of bins in schools. * Presented our project to Verona Murphy TD and got feedback * Made presentations to Junior students * In 1st yr English class ran a competition for the name of our project.
Our Impact
Currently we are highlighting the issue of waste and the use of bins in the school. Once we have introduced the new bins in each classroom and students and teachers and disposing of litter correctly the classrooms should be tidier and easier to learn and work in. The cleaners job should be easier. The whole school should look a lot nicer and cleaner.
