Identify and investigate the reasons why young girls/women stop playing sports, and try to encourage them to keep playing them.
Our Social Issue
Gender and Sport - A lot of girls leave their sports when they get to secondary school.
Why We Chose It
We are concerned that a lot of girls in our local area are dropping their sports whether they don’t like it anymore or if it’s caused by their coaches or teammates.
Our Goal
Our big idea for ysi was to convince girls to stay in sport longer and figure out why they left so early. Our first idea was to do a poster campaign but we decided that it wouldn’t get our message across so we interviewed two 3rd year girls and asked them about their experience as playing sport as a girl. We also survey each year group in our school to try and understand the reasons why girls leave sport during their teenage years. Finally we organised a talk with a GAA player.
Our Innovative Action
The action we have taken are creating a survey and surveying all year groups to collect information. We have also brought a sports woman who plays GAA for the Dublin team to talk to the first years.
Our Impact
We made a positive difference by surveying all year groups to collect information. We also brought a sports woman who plays for the GAA for the Dublin team to talk to the first years.
