We hope to raise awareness about the impact we have on sea life in our day to day lives. We want to educate people on the dangers of ocean pollution to not just the fish but us as well. We will organise campaigns and fundraisers to help make a difference and donate all the proceeds to charities that help address this issue. We hope we will encourage people to start thinking about their actions and take better care of our sea and to inspire them to take our issue seriously. We would be participating in beach clean-ups to clean our beaches by removing litter to make them more pleasing, healthy and clean.
Our Social Issue
Life Below Water (SDG 14)
Why We Chose It
We've chosen to focus on saving our seas as our social issue because we're deeply passionate about it. It hits close to home for us at Loreto Dalkey since our school is situated by the sea. Witnessing polluted waters from our windows is disheartening, and we're committed to making a difference. We also aim to raise awareness about the dangers of sea pollution and its far-reaching impact on our entire community. It's crucial for everyone to understand how it affects not just individuals, but all of us as a community . This awareness is key to fostering meaningful change.
Our Goal
We propose conducting an acidification test on both local and Irish waters. Our approach involves collecting water samples from various coastal locations like Bullock Harbour, Dun Laoghaire, Arklow, Wicklow, etc. These samples will then be tested using pH indicator paper to determine their acidity levels. This comprehensive assessment will provide insights into which specific bodies of water require more treatment than others. Our goals are to raise awareness about the state of our waters and the impact of human activity, and to work towards reducing this problem.
Our Innovative Action
We have taken numerous actions to try tackle the global issue ‘life below water’. We partnered with a local activist Flossie and did two beach cleans on Killiney beach. We found lots of rubbish including things wrapped in seaweed like tissues. We filmed a video promoting our YSI and showed it at our school talent show. We partnered with another YSI group- Justice Packs, and had a bake sale to raise more awareness on our goals. We also went to the Eirgrid day in the Aviva. Here, they explained our YSI goal to many different schools.
Our Impact
We have made a number of positive differences. We beach cleaned Killiney beach twice, picking up rubbish like cans bottles and tissues wrapped in seaweed. This made the beach noticeably cleaner. We made a positive difference by telling all the students in our school about our YSI group. We did this by making a video informing everyone about our global goal. We also wrote a song ourselves.
