Our YSI team is dedicated to championing equality in women's sports through our project. This social issue encompasses a wide range of important issues, and we, as young women in predominantly male-dominated sports, believe in the significance of instigating change. We are convinced that our project can help usher in much-needed transformation in these areas. We firmly believe that women's sports should receive the same level of media coverage as men's sports, and female athletes should be compensated fairly in comparison to their male counterparts. Our mission is to raise awareness about these critical issues and educate people on how we can make these changes happen. Our goal is to promote gender equality in sports from an early age by advocating for equal opportunities. For example, we are working towards ensuring that girls' schools have access to the same sports resources as boys' schools. In a just and equal world, funding and attention for girls' and boys' sports should be the same, allowing everyone to realize their full athletic potential. We are determined to shift the perception of women's sports as less interesting and less important than men's sports.
Our Social Issue
Our focus is directed toward the Social issue of women in sports that links with Sustainable Development Goal #5, which aims to attain gender equality. We want to address the disparities in treatment between female and male athletes, encompassing variations in government funding, access to sporting facilities, and recognition in disciplines like hockey. Gender Disparities in Sports: One issue we see is the glaring disparity in resource allocation. Male athletes receive significantly more government funding, which translates into superior access to top-tier sporting facilities, better equipment, and heightened recognition in school sports. Female athletes face unequal opportunities, undermining their sporting pursuits. We have a good hockey pitch at our school but we notice other all boys schools have more focus on sports in our locality. We think this can be changed by governments, educational institutions, and sports organizations should proactively level the playing field by allocating resources impartially, ensuring female athletes have access to the same opportunities as their male counterparts.
Why We Chose It
We've chosen to tackle gender disparities in sports due to our strong passion for empowering women and championing equality. Inspired by Mary Ward values of empowerment and equality, we prioritize offering support to girls to play sports. We were also inspired by our hockey coach who played at the Olympics. Our objective is to dismantle stereotypes and establish an inclusive environment conducive to women's success as we believe educating leads to success. Through collective efforts, we aim to advance gender equality and elevate the standard of education in sports.
Our Goal
Our big idea revolves around empowering women in sports, aligning with Mary Ward quote of Women in time will come to do much. We're determined to shine a light on gender disparities in sports and Shattering Sterotype support to young girls chasing their athletic aspirations. Building on our YSI Den t-shirts. Our aim is to cultivate an inclusive and supportive environment where women can flourish in sports, paving the way for a brighter future for the next generation. Together, we're committed to advancing gender equality and promoting quality education in sports (SDG).
Our Innovative Action
We've tired several things to address social issues and shatter stereotypes. Firstly, we compiled scholarship pamphlets for women in sports and distributed them at school events. Additionally, we displayed motivational posters to promote discussions about gender equality. We partnered with local sports clubs and groups to mentor young girls interested in sports through Gaisce. Moreover, we've been actively engaging in our social media campaign with Giselle by our side. We hosted an online movie night and placed orders for our t-shirts. These initiatives reflect our commitment to making a positive impact and challenging stereotypes in sports and society.
Our Impact
We've been making a real difference by tackling social issues and breaking stereotypes. We created scholarship pamphlets, distributed at school events, empowering women in sports with resources to chase their dreams. Our motivational posters sparked discussions about gender equality, shifting attitudes. Teaming with local clubs, we mentor young girls, boosting their confidence in sports. Our social media and community events spread awareness and inclusivity, forging a fairer environment for all. We have been able to check these impacts through ipad surveys we have airdropped to random sample classes and looking at our meta figures and polls on instagram.
