The goal of our project was to raise awareness about gender inequality in sport within our school community, while introducing initiatives to boost and improve equality. All through school, there has always been a distinct inequality in sport within our school. Whether it was new kits, supporter buses or simply just more training for the boys, this inequality has always been within our school. Since it has always been there, we felt it was almost normalized or overlooked by people in school, so we aimed to fix this. We felt people had to be educated about this and they really had to learn about the day-to-day inequalities faced by many people in our school community. We felt only then when people actually knew about these and were educated, change could finally be achieved. By the end we hope we have achieved change, whether it be just a change of mindset, or we physically change the school community for the better, anything will have a huge difference for this social issue affecting many students in our school. We derived four goals from an online survey, recognition, support, fundraise for gear and overall improve equality.
Our Social Issue
Project Name (update): Level the playing field The social concern we decided to tackle was gender inequality in sport, more specifically within our school community. We chose the social issue of gender inequality in sports because sports play a significant role in our lives, particularly in our rural community. We did an online survey within our school community, where 57 males, 60 females and 9 others gave their opinions on sport, which revealed to us the strong need to combat some problems within our school community. We decided to emphasis recognition, support and equality, while raising money for gear for our school.
Why We Chose It
We chose the social issue of gender equality in sports because sports play a significant role in our lives, particularly in our rural community. Recognizing the transformative power of sports, we feel passionately about breaking down gender barriers to ensure equal opportunities for everyone. Our personal experiences have highlighted the positive impact sports can have on individuals and communities, motivating us to address gender disparities and create a more inclusive sports culture within our school and beyond.
Our Goal
Our big idea is to make our school's sports culture more inclusive and equal. We aim to break down gender barriers by promoting mixed sports events, challenging stereotypes, and fostering a supportive environment where every student, regardless of gender, feels empowered to participate and excel in sports. Our goal is to create a lasting legacy of equality, ensuring that all members of our school community have equal opportunities, representation, and recognition in the realm of sports.
Our Innovative Action
We have taken action to promote 4 main areas, recognition, support, fundraising for gear and overall equality. To boost recognition we designed a Recognition Programme, showcasing a weekly round-up of the sporting events and achievements, irrespective of gender. We introduced Sports Inclusion Officers as part of the student council where students can voice concerns and active change can be done immediately. We raised funds for the girls gear through a bake sale and we also organsied two successful gender-neutral sporting events to further reinforce the principles of gender equality.
Our Impact
Our team has made a resounding positive difference in promoting gender equality in sports within our school through an inclusive approach that has empowered individuals and transformed mindsets. Every initiative was designed to show the school community that we heard their concerns and problems and made them into a positive change. By challenging preconceived notions and advocating for equality, we have witnessed a positive shift in attitudes towards sports. Additionally, we have taken competition out of it and we have proven sports can be fun and inclusive. We have enjoyed the process.
