We want to promote and enhance well-being in our school community and also in our wider community. We want to promote and enhance physical well-being, positive mental health and stress management as well as working to build stronger community bonds by creating a sense of connection between all community members.
Our Social Issue
Community well-being
Why We Chose It
In July of last year, we lost two students in our school in a terrible road traffic accident. Our whole community was devastated by this event. We were particularly conscious of impact on our own year group. Dlava should be with us in TY. We knew that many other students and teachers, who were close to the girls, would be suffering too. Dlava and Keia’s siblings are in our school, we recognised how difficult school would be for them and their friends. This is why we wanted to improve wellbeing in our school.
Our Goal
We aim to improve the overall well-being of our school and the wider community. We will use the Wellbeing Indicators, as outlined by the PDST, to increase wellness for everyone. We have or will soon organise activities to promote and improve physical activity, and positive mental health, encourage healthy eating, increase a sense of community connectedness, promote resilience, and promote respect for self and others. We hope to do this through a variety of educational pieces, volunteering activities, friendship-building activities, and also through connecting with nature and working to protect the natural environment and to connect with community.
Our Innovative Action
Resilience talks/workshops for staff/6th years, Largy Family Tree mural, Positive affirmations murals, Book Drive for local primary school, Produced a anti-racism/refugees educational resource, Peer Education programme to increase literacy, numeracy and social skills in first years, fundraising for LA519 and for The Irish Red Cross, Whole School Tutor Class on Wellbeing and Halloween Safety, Providing care packs in the school bathrooms, Providing sanitary products in the girls' bathrooms, organised a healthy eating workshop for TYs, organised Siolta Chroí sustainability workshops for TYs, Advent calendar of wellbeing fun, Community Welcome Event for Dlava's sister and family
Our Impact
Very positive feedback from staff and 6th years about the resilience training. We had very successful lessons with 1st years based on the lessons in our antiracism/refugee resource, 1st years are making good progress on their literacy and numeracy skills as well as becoming more confident. Our care packs are accessed by students, we top them up ever few weeks. The sanitary products are topped up weekly. The community event was a great success with the very positive feedback from community and further afield and the families and children enjoyed the fuss.
