To prevent and raise awareness of spiking.
Our Social Issue
Stop The Spike!
Why We Chose It
As young teenage girls ourselves, we see first hand the repercussions and long term effects of spiking. Spiking firstly makes you more vulnerable to sexual assault as you are physically weaker and less conscious of what is going on around you. Spiking can also have long term effects on the mental health and wellbeing of young people. This social issue is very important and we chose it as it directly affects our peers.
Our Goal
Our idea is to decrease the amount of spiking in Cork.We hope to achieve this by providing education and spreading awareness of spiking. We can help younger people recognise the signs of spiking so they can protect themselves and others from being spiked. We also hope to create social media accounts to inform more people as we can reach a wider audience of young teenage girls online.
Our Innovative Action
We have presented to younger students and our peers about the symptoms and dangers of vape, drink and needle spiking. We also designed posters to raise awareness of the issue throughout the school. The posters were incredibly beneficial as they provided awareness in an eye-catching and memorable way. We have also already collaborated with another YSI group “Break the Bias” as they are dealing with gender inequality and this is a part of this topic. We are planning to create social media accounts and get a public health nurse in to speak in the future, to further enhance our ideas.
Our Impact
We feel that we have made a positive impact by educating others on the harsh realities of spiking and by also creating open discussions in our school. We hope that now younger students in our school are more informed on the symptoms and dangers of spiking and can take action to prevent being spiked, and help others who have been spiked.
