Why We Chose It
We selected cervical cancer as our focal social issue due to its pervasive impact on individuals worldwide. Recognising its prevalence and the significant toll it exacts on countless lives, we were compelled to address this pressing concern. Moreover, our group, comprised entirely of females, found resonance in tackling a topic that directly pertains to our demographic. Given the alarming statistic that cervical cancer ranks as the fourth most common cancer among women, with 604,000 cases reported in 2020 alone, we were motivated to raise awareness and deepen understanding surrounding this critical health issue.
Our Goal
Our big idea revolves around advocating for a reduction in the screening age for cervical cancer, aiming to lower it from 25 to younger. While we acknowledge the challenges inherent in realising this vision, we remain confident in our conviction that the potential benefits far outweigh the obstacles. By instituting this change, we anticipate a profound impact on public health, with early detection affording individuals a fighting chance against this insidious disease. With our advocacy efforts, we're committed to fostering a culture of awareness surrounding cervical cancer, with the aim of dismantling the barriers of fear and stigma associated
Our Innovative Action
• Surveyed all students from 3rd-6th year in our school to find out what they knew • Presented to all 3rd-6th years to raise awareness • Held a Christmas Jumper Day to raise funds • Created and displayed posters in school and on the TV screens around school • Advertised our project on our school’s social media pages • Wrote to the health minster to raise our concerns and seek support • Organised an upcoming fundraising day in our local community for Friday 12th April • Worked collaboratively as a group
Our Impact
We've made significant strides in our mission by amplifying awareness, fostering education, and destigmatising our chosen issue. Through a series of engaging initiatives, we've galvanised our school community, involving them in impactful fundraising activities while forging meaningful connections with our local community. Moreover, our efforts have not only imparted valuable lessons to our fellow students but have also instilled in them the courage to advocate for change and effect positive transformations in their spheres of influence.
