The goal of our YSI team is to encourage teenagers, young adults and all age groups to buy pre-loved clothes and reduce the production of fast fashion items. As Fast Fashion is one of the main contributors to climate change. Buying pre-loved clothes will reduce the impact of making clothes on the environment and slow climate change. We aim to bring about a change in attitude and encourage people to shop preloved clothes including with charity shops like St. Vincent de Paul.

Our Social Issue

According to the UN the fashion industry is responsible for 8-10% of global emissions. The quick change of fashion trends and the accessibility of affordable, mass-produced clothing with a never-ending supply of new styles uses a lot of natural resources and creates greenhouse gas emissions. The fashion industry is extremely resource-intensive and may be one of the most polluting industries in the world. Cotton for the fashion industry uses about 2.5% of the world's farmland, synthetic materials need approximately 342 million barrels of oil every year and processes such as dying clothes requires approx 43 million tonnes of chemicals a year. Some studies suggest that it takes approximately 2,700 litres of water to produce just one cotton t-shirt.(BBC). Also locally millions of Fast Fashion items end up in landfills.

Why We Chose It

This project is important to us because we have learned that when we buy new clothes we are contributing to the problem of fast fashion and the disastrous effect it is having on our planet. We believe that we can make a real impact by using our project to encourage people to change their habit of reducing the amount of clothes they buy or by choosing to buy pre-loved.

Our Goal

Our goals are to reduce fast fashion and encourage people to buy pre-loved. By establishing a partnership with Buncrana SVP we are highlighting the impact of fast fashion and how you can make a difference by shopping in local charity shops for fashion. We are using Tik Tok & Insta promote buying pre loved clothes in Buncana SVP shop. We are developing a website for Buncrana SVP as a pilot, If successful share with all SVP shops in Ireland. We have participated in the School fashion show to promote buying pre-loved fashion. Partner with Miss Earth Ireland to promote buying pre-loved

Our Innovative Action

1. established a partnership with our local SVP shop. 2. Promoted the preloved clothes from SVP on Social Media using reels and images. 3. established a partnership with Miss Earth Ireland, Layla Doherty to highlight our issue. 4. Used the school fashion show as an platform to promote buying Pre-love fashion. 5. In the process of developing a website for SVP , using Buncrana as a pilot scheme, if successful can be used across Ireland.

Our Impact

Our reels and images have been watched over 100,000 times between last years project and this years project. All of these views have re-enforced the message to shop pre-loved fashion. We have shown that shopping pre-loved in shops like our local SVP shop can provide affordable and up-to date fashion and make a difference to our environment. Reducing the impact of fast fashion makes help to reduce the damage done to our environment,
