Our group hopes to raise awareness about racism and racial discrimination in sport. We want to send a message to young people, particularly children in primary schools aged 10-12 (5th & 6th class). Many of these children are involved in sport and we believe that facing racism within sport could negatively impact their experience of in sport. We also hope to encourage these children to report racial discrimination to an adult if they see or hear behaviour of this kind happening, so that they can stop it immediately.
Our Social Issue
Racism in sport is the social issue that we have chosen. In various sports such as football and basketball, racism is common among fans and even some players. We want to encourage and educate the younger generation that this kind of behaviour is unacceptable and should be looked down upon. We feel that this is a widespread issue in society.
Why We Chose It
Our group chose this topic and issue because we all had seen racism first hand on and off the pitch. We all had friends not wanting to play football because the opposition was giving them abuse, and we all thought this was unacceptable. We wanted to make sure nobody had to experience this and everybody was treated equal.
Our Goal
Our group idea was to try to make people more aware about the increasing problem which is racism in football. We want to educate people from the younger generation in particular because we believe that they are the ones that will make a big difference to the world in a few years. To do this, we want to go to a primary school in our area, and give them a presentation.
Our Innovative Action
We decided to target the younger generation. We wanted to go to kerrykeel primary school, but we had to raise money for a bus. We rang the bus company and we got a quote for €90. We then decided to do a bake sale to raise money for the bus. We ended up raising €240.
Our Impact
Yes, i believe that our group has made a positive difference as we have educated about 50 primary School children about this social issue. They could hopefully teach their friends and family what we Have taught them. We hope that the children will be more accepting To their friends and become more accepting Towards people from other races.
