Our team hopes to highlight the issues created by the overuse of technology in young children aged between 8-12 (in 4th, 5th, 6th class). We also hope to raise awareness about the importance of reducing screen time for young children due to the negative side effects of technology, such as those on their physical & mental health. Finally, we hope to educate parents on the negative consequences that may impact their children if they overuse technology, and help show them the influential role they can play in reducing screen time to benefit their child’s health.
Our Social Issue
The social issue our team has chosen to address is how technology negatively affects young children aged 8-12 years. We have chosen this issue as it we believe it is relevant to children in our society and because we feel that parents are struggling to keep children away from technology. As teenagers having grown up with technology, we strongly feel that there are many negative effects of over-using technology and we want to highlight this to children & their parents. We feel that our campaign could potentially help children & parents attempt to reduce screen time in their homes.
Why We Chose It
We chose the issue of excessive screen time and its negative effects on young children because it resonates with us. Many team members have younger siblings and have noticed their extensive use of devices. While technology can be beneficial, we believe too much screen time can harm social skills, health and academics, as children miss face to face interactions and outdoor activities. We aim to raise awareness among parents and caregivers about setting healthy screen time boundaries. By sharing our experiences, we hope to promote balanced lifestyles for children, ensuring they grow up healthy and happy without excessive screen exposure.
Our Goal
Our idea is to raise awareness about the negative effects of excessive screen time on young children. We aim to educate parents and caregivers on the importance of setting limits and encouraging alternative activities that support development. Our goals include creating engaging resources, like pamphlets and competitions, to share practical tips for balancing screen use with other activities. Ultimately, we want to create a healthier environment where children can enjoy technology responsibly while engaging in physical play and meaningful interactions, making a positive impact on their well-being.
Our Innovative Action
Some of the actions we have taken is we asked for permission to have a bake sale to raise money for our transport to Scoil eoin batiste. We also contacted the bus company to sort out our transport to the primary school. We are also trying to get a GAA coach in to help to help the children get more active and get fresh air.We also sent out a survey to the first years asking them about there screen time and other questions to do with electronic devices and we hope to set up a challenge/competition to see which person can lower there screen Time in a school week.
Our Impact
We have made a positive difference by contacting our target ages and teaching them about the effects technology has on them so that they can apply it to themselves. Many children wouldn’t know what’s a good or bad screentime or screen limit, so by giving the talk and handing out leaflets for them to give to their parents we’re informing them on the harm of the internet and benefits of less use. We’re giving parents and guardians that don't have the time or resources to research these dangers a quick and easy alternative that gives them loads of ideas.
