Our goal with this project is to raise awareness about domestic abuse and support those affected. We also want to educate young people about the topic and give students important skills that will be valuable to have for the future. Importantly, we aim to help discourage domestic violence before it starts by having a large part of our actions with this project be focused on students.
Our Social Issue
Domestic abuse

Why We Chose It
We chose to focus on domestic abuse because it’s a very impactful issue that can affect anyone, including teens like us. It’s also an issue that often gets overlooked or misunderstood, especially in our age group, yet it has long-term effects on mental health, future relationships and how safe people feel in their daily lives. We hope that by starting the conversation now that we can break this cycle of violence in this new generation and raise awareness early on in students’ lives, as well as equip students with the skills to help themselves. It’s so important to speak out.

Our Goal
The main idea behind our project is to raise awareness about domestic abuse and provide practical tools, like self-defence, for young people. Our goal is to ensure that students and the wider community are better equipped to recognise the signs of abuse early on and know where to seek help. We hope to make a positive, lasting change in our community by creating a safer environment and encouraging open conversations about domestic abuse, so that people know how to break the silence and stand up for themselves and others. Fundraising is also important so that we can support those affected.

Our Innovative Action
We collaborated with DDVS to do workshops in our school about healthy relationships and domestic abuse. We also collaborated with a local jiu-jitsu club to do self-defence classes. Additionally, we held a fundraiser, raising over €1000 for DDVS. We also put posters around our community. In addition, we created a TikTok and YouTube account. We posted videos of us demonstrating self-defence and ones about domestic abuse. We also made a website and a podcast called Break the Silence. Lastly, we donated paintings we made to a DRCC art exhibition. We also brainstormed ideas for an app to help victims.

Our Impact
Through the workshops and the classes with our local jiu-jitsu club, we’ve made a positive difference on students in our school by giving them valuable knowledge and skills. The posters we created and displayed around our community also helped raise awareness. Additionally, our social media presence and podcast were impactful, allowing us to share important information about domestic abuse and to talk more about our project, as well as demonstrate self-defence. We also raised over €1000 for DDVS to support the older children in their services. With our efforts, we feel we’ve contributed to breaking the silence surrounding domestic abuse.
