Our project was designed to address sustainable development goal no.5 of Gender Equality. Our primary goal is to raise awareness surrounding this Pink Tax. Our target group is women in Ireland. We aim to educate women about their rights and help them access everyday essential products, such as feminine hygiene goods. We hope to support our local community by fundraising for the Women’s Centre in Letterkenny. We hope that this can help local women who may be struggling financially to access feminine hygiene products. We understand it is difficult for women in this society to be able to afford everything and take care ofchildren at the same time. We hope to make as many people as possible aware of this issue and hopefully influence them to do their part in helping women as well.
Our Social Issue
The social issue we have chosen relates to women's rights and gender equality. A big part of this problem that we wish to address is the price difference in men’s products compared to women's products. This disparity is also known as 'Pink Tax'. As a group, we understand it is difficult for some women to be able to afford these products for themselves and also for their children without the added expense of pink tax. Therefore, we wish to raise awareness surrounding Pink Tax and provide some solutions to help women access such products.
Why We Chose It
As a group of young females we have first hand experience needing feminine hygiene products whether that be in school, in our places or in public. We believe that Period poverty is a serious social issue that needs to be more vocally campaigned for as we as women do not deserve to pay the price of period products especially to large companies in which are actually males owned.
Our Goal
Our big idea is to raise awareness for period poverty in Ireland and help educate those who are not aware of the topic mainly males. We hope to achieve free period products for our school and for males to be more educated on the topic as they don’t understand the price women have to pay for having a menstrual cycle every month.
Our Innovative Action
We got into contact with Donegal's women centre and we inquired about having someone come in and have a talk with Transition Year about the work they do in the Women’s Centre and the importance of the issue of the cost of women’s sanitary products.
Our Impact
We believe our team has made a positive impact on our school and the awareness of the issue. We think that the fact we raised money to purchase sanitary products for the girls bathrooms was thoughtful of us as we thought of all the girls in our school that may unexpectedly get their period and might not have any products with them.
