To complete social innovations in relation to the prevalence of spiking in areas such as: education, political activism, fundraising for charities associated with raising awareness around spiking in Ireland, and highlighting of the social issue to both the school communities of Mallow but also the general public.

Our Social Issue

Spiking of people in Ireland and internationally via drinks or intravenously - awareness and education initiatives around the social issue, current government legislation and funding of charities linked to the topic.

Why We Chose It

For our Young Social Innovator project, we selected spiking as our focus after considering topics such as domestic abuse, water safety, and doping. Through extensive discussion, we identified spiking as a critical issue and acknowledged its sensitivity. Spiking is a growing concern, particularly among young adults, and increasing awareness among teenagers is vital. It occurs in various social settings, including concerts, parties, and nightclubs, often leading to serious consequences. We are dedicated to addressing this issue by educating the public through workshops, fundraising, and providing essential information on prevention and response strategies.

Our Goal

Our big idea is based on the prevalence of spiking in contemporary Irish society today. According to the Gardaí, reports of spiking incidents have increased significantly, but the HSE estimate that up to 200 cases go unreported each year due to fear or lack of evidence. This number should be zero. To complete social innovations in relation to the prevalence of spiking in areas such as: education, political activism, fundraising for charities associated with raising awareness around spiking in Ireland, and highlighting of the social issue to both the school communities of Mallow but also the general public.

Our Innovative Action

Due to other commitments, our YSI group is still working on some social innovations. However, we are advancing efforts to educate our school and local communities about drink spiking. We will host an educational talk with representatives from the Garda Síochána and HSE to raise awareness about its dangers. Additionally, we will create posters highlighting the signs, symptoms, and preventive measures, which will be shared in SPHE classes. We are also engaging with political representatives to address legislative gaps. Finally, a fundraising talent show with local schools will raise awareness and support organizations like Drinkaware.ie and Safe Gigs Ireland.

Our Impact

By the end of this year, we aim to significantly raise awareness about drink spiking and its dangers. In March, we will host an interschool talent show with The Patrician Academy and Davis College, donating proceeds to Drinkaware and Safe Gigs.ie. A raffle, featuring prizes from local businesses, will further support this cause. We will also deliver educational sessions to school year groups on identifying spiking signs, prevention, and assistance. Additionally, we plan to organise a talk from a spiking victim or professional. To extend our reach, we have created @Spot.the.spike on Instagram and TikTok, and are engaging political representatives.
