Why We Chose It

We spent a lot of time deciding on a topic for our project. For one of our YSI classes our teacher did the A to Z of social issues and we decided to pick immigration for our topic. One of the reasons we chose it is because in our class a lot of students are immigrants themselves or their parents are immigrants. We feel passionately about this topic because it is a real life thing for us. Our parents chose to come to Ireland for a better life and jobs and we want to show the benefits.

Our Goal

I think it is really good and positive that we are doing this. Swords community college is a new school and there are lot of different cultures and people from all around the world. We try to encourage people to speak up about their immigration experiences. We are doing this because we think that immigration is good and we want to show the benefits of immigration and how it has helped our school and our community. We want to raise awareness of how immigration enriches all our lives and to dispel the negative myths in the media.

Our Innovative Action

The actions we took were, first of all we designed and distributed a survey to the school students. The en analysed the results and we carried out further interviews on students who wanted to share their stories. We then are compiling these stories into a booklet for use in CSPE class We researched statistics on immigration in Ireland and made information posters. We made a video and will make more to show the wider community what our project is about.

Our Impact

We have a made a positive difference by allowing the immigrant students in our school a chance to share their experience with the wider school community. We are empowering them to be positive about their immigrant journey and not to be held back by the negative stories. We are raising awareness of the benefits of immigration to Ireland among our school and we are creating resources for our CSPE teachers as well.
