Raising awareness and educating the school community about Fairtrade and inequality in global trade.
Our Social Issue
We choose fair trade and the cocoa industry as our social issue. We hoped to raise awareness in our school and local community of trade inequality in many every day products such as cocoa, tea, coffee, sugar and bananas.
Who We Worked With
We worked with staff and management in our school. We worked with the school canteen, local primary school, local Centra and Trocaire. We also worked with all of the the students in the school.
How We Communicated
We told all students in our school through posters and announcements. We invited 5th and 6th classes from the local primary school to participate in a quiz about Fairtrade and it's affect on cocoa farmers in Western Africa. We created content for the school's social media accounts to raise awareness in the wider community. We surveyed the staff of the school about their willingness to use Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar in the staffroom. We contacted the company of our school canteen and asked them to stock Fairtrade tea, coffee, sugar and banana's. We also contacted our local Centra and asked them to stock more Fairtrade products in their shop.
Our Innovative Action and Impact
We hosted a Fairtrade Bake Off and Bake Sale. Students and staff were invited to bake cakes or buns using at least one Fairtrade product. The buns and cakes were sold in our Fairtrade Bake Sale. The money raised was donated to Trocaire. We hosted a Fairtrade Quiz for the 5th and 6th classes in our local primary school. We also gave them Fairtrade chocolate and tea. We asked our school to provide only Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar in the staffroom. Finally, we did a whole school assembly quiz. All students were shown a short Fairtrade video and answered questions on them. The best student in every class received a Fairtrade chocolate bar.
