To give a helping hand to those in need.
Our Social Issue
In class we chose Poverty as our social issue for our social innovation project. Poverty is an on-going issue in Ireland and its affecting a huge number of families. Although we as a class cant stop poverty but we can be apart of the mission to help and prevent it. In our class throughout a couple of weeks we hade a lot of discussions about the topic and about the meaning and seriousness of poverty. We had a few debates and a show of hands. It is very important that we talk about poverty as it is still going on in our society today and it is very disappointing and upsetting, We came up with some good ideas on how we can step in and help the people who are suffering and don’t even have enough money to pay for a warm and safe place to stay or to feed themselves and there familys. With the ideas we came up with we decided to collect food and donate it to the local soup kitchen in Tralee so people in need of a hot meal we can provide some food to help them. We have to donate pershiable food such as cans of food or biscuits or canned food we hope this can help as many people as possible and a huge thank you to the Tralee soup kitchen they help so many people in need and provide a warm 3 course meal for the people in need of food. We are happy to be able to help as a class.
Who We Worked With
We worked with organisations such as Trocaire ,Goal and Concern for information for our project. We also worked with Team Hope and Tralee Soup Kitchen.
How We Communicated
We told the school and local community through posters, flyers.
Our Innovative Action and Impact
Our class decided to make Christmas boxes for children our shoeboxes helped children across the world. In our class we tried to make a difference to help people in need around the world. This is very helpful for the children abroad as there are a lot of families living with water, food power, clothes, and even some don’t have any where to sleep at night. We where aloud to bring in bar of soap sweets with long date and toothbrush, pen/ copies/colouring pens. And our shoeboxes might make a difference to some kids this year as without Team Hope they would revive no presents on Christmas Then our class did a second vote for either bake sale to raise money for the poor or non- school uniform day or items for Tralee soup kitchen. And we as a class choose Tralee soup kitchen and it helps families who can’t afford ESB bills. And the soup kitchen in Tralee either makes meals for the poor to eat otherwise the can collect food and cook it them selves if they want. Items we were able to bring in where perishable items E.G. pasta, rice, beans/pees, sauce and cookies/chocolate. And we were not able to bring in dairy items like meat, milk, yogurt, eggs. Our big idea was to solve poverty in our local area to make sure everyone had a bed to sleep on at night and food and water and electricity.
