Micheal, 17, Kerry
Micheal from Kerry has designed an educational Climate Change board game for the #YSIOpenCall.
Micheal’s passion for climate change began in school. Living close to the Wild Atlantic Way, he was surrounded by natural beauty and wanted to play his part in protecting it. He noticed that the topic of climate change made his peers anxious, due to the feeling that they could not prevent it or do anything to protect the environment.
With current restrictions in place and most people being asked to stay at home, Micheal noticed the benefits to nature from less traffic, activity etc. He began to notice the bird song and the air around him feeling cleaner.
Reflecting on these changes, Micheal’s lightbulb moment came to him! He would bring education and fun together and design a board game to educate people on the small changes they can make to help combat climate change.
The aim of the game is to encourage a change of mindset in players. They learn how to adapt their daily routine to reduce their carbon footprint and benefit the environment.
Micheal has already had success with his game. He surveyed players before and after they played, and they reported to know more about what they can do to help after having played. Feedback also allowed Micheal to make improvements to the game going forward.
Changing the world, one game at a time!
